Why renting Blu-ray movies makes perfect sense

Sony's Blu-ray Disc is arguably overpriced and overhyped, and it probably won't be nearly as successful as DVD which can be rip DVD to video and play on PC with DVD Ripper software, but I came across an interesting tidbit of information over the weekend that may make some change their minds about the success of the high-definition video format.

According to Nielsen VideoScan figures for the week ending February 22, Blu-ray captured 10 percent market share, and sales were up 29.31 percent over the same week last year. DVD captured the remaining 90 percent share, but its revenues were down almost 12 percent, year over year.

Granted, that's just one week's figures, and it doesn't mean much in the broader sense, but if you look at previous weeks, those figures are much the same. In fact, Blu-ray is slowly gaining ground on DVD, and its 10 percent share is actually an impressive figure, given its history.

I usually spend my video-allocated cash on other formats, but there is one place where Blu-ray will always win out for me: rentals. I won't stream films, and I won't rent DVDs. Blu-ray is the only format that I will rent from my local video store or get from Netflix. It's as simple as that.
I've had too many lackluster experiences with streaming films. More often than not, if I stream a film through my cable video-on-demand box, it will look grainy, and its quality is the same as DVD even though it's advertised as an HD film. I watched "W" recently via a stream, and along with an absolutely ludicrous story, I found that the film's visual and audio quality were downright awful. But the worst part was having paid $4.99 for a DVD-quality film that was supposed to be in high definition.

The same is true (in most cases) when I stream films through my Apple TV and convert DVD to Apple TV video with DVD to Apple TV Converter. More often than not, the "HD" film doesn't look nearly as nice as it should, and part of that is due to the fact that those films are available only in 720p, but the other part is that, well, they're just not that great over a streaming solution.

In my long search for great visuals, I've decided to rent Blu-ray films. Notice how I said rent? Yeah, well, I still won't buy them--they're too expensive.

And I'm starting to believe I'm not alone. According to market research firm Adams Research, film studios witnessed a 23.4 percent decline in DVD and Blu-ray sales during the fourth quarter of 2008. Although the company didn't break out sales of Blu-ray and DVD, and failed to mention why it believed this happened besides the economy, I don't think that it's a stretch to say more folks are switching to Blu-ray and choosing rentals over retail.

Blu-ray simply looks best on my HDTV. It may not provide a huge value jump over DVD, and more often than not, the difference in picture quality is negligible, when I compare it to a film in my upconverting DVD player, but for $1 more at my local Hollywood Video or Netflix, it's worth using the next-generation format and finding those certain films that really do look much better on Blu-ray than anything else (I'm looking at you, "Dark Knight").

At this point, when I'm ready to start watching a film at my house, I want the most value for my money. I can't get that with streaming services today because so far, at least in my experience, their ease of use is overshadowed by their general lack of outstanding visual and audio quality. And I won't rent DVDs because it doesn't make much sense, when Blu-ray films are available in the next shelf over for $1 or $2 more. The price difference is so small that it makes perfect sense for me to look for the film on Blu-ray.

When the price difference becomes negligible between the two formats on store shelves, that's when I'll start buying Blu-ray films by the bushel. But until then, Blu-ray's niche in my entertainment life is in rentals, where the price difference is slight, and the relative quality is great.

It's the perfect rental format.

More US Consumers Drop Cable, DVDs As Content Moves Online

SAN FRANCISCO -(Dow Jones)- For an idea of what's vexing U.S. entertainment industry executives these days, take a look at how Todd Mundt in Louisville, Ky., watches television and movies.

Eager to save money, the public radio station employee canceled his cable- television subscription, opting instead to get his favorite shows from a host of free streaming video sites, including Hulu.com, a joint venture of General Electric Co.'s (GE) NBC Universal and News Corp. (NWS). Rather than rent DVDs from Blockbuster Inc. (BBI), Mundt streams movies from Netflix Inc. (NFLX), a cheap and convenient substitute.

Mundt estimates he's saving at least $50 a month by getting his entertainment over the broadband connection he would pay for anyway just to have access to the Web. His prowess at finding entertainment online has also made him the envy of friends and colleagues.

"A lot of my friends take a look at my setup and say, 'Cool, how do I do that? '" Mundt said.
Mundt is one of a growing tide of consumers that over the last year or so have begun cutting their cable television subscriptions and shunning DVDs as more content becomes available online and faster broadband connections reach more parts of the country. Now, with the economy in a tailspin and consumers pinching budgets, the trend is picking up speed even though high-definition offerings and live events are still hard to come by.

No one knows how many people have cut their cable subscriptions, though some estimates have put the figure at about 1.1 million, or 1% of U.S. households with televisions. But already the trend is being blamed for shrinking performances at entertainment giants like Walt Disney Co. (DIS) and Time Warner Cable (TWC). Both companies blamed slipping revenue in part on the trend at earnings conferences last week.

DVD sales have also been hit. The Los Angeles-based Digital Entertainment Group estimates DVD sales in 2008 fell 8% to $21.6 billion from a year earlier, while DVD rentals were flat.
Cable and satellite television operators, who rely on subscription-based TV for about half of their revenue, are likely to be the biggest losers from the trend.

"People, particularly young people, are saying all I need is broadband," Time Warner Cable Chief Executive Glenn Britt said recently. "The danger here is...people will choose not to buy subscription video."

Internet delivered movies also threatens to undermine the $14 billion in revenue that movie studios generate by distributing their titles on DVDs. That's because many consumers are asking themselves why they should buy a disc when the same movies are available over the Internet, often at a big discount or for free.

Walt Disney Co. (DIS) is among the major U.S. studios to take notice. Disney said its studio revenues were down 26% last quarter and earnings before items were off 62% because of a soft DVD market driven in part by people accessing entertainment online. Already the shift has prompted Disney to shrink its home- video business.

"Consumer choice grows, we all know this to be true," Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger said recently. "This clearly has had an impact on broadcast television and may have a long-term potential impact on the DVD business."

Not all companies will suffer and already potential winners are starting to emerge.

Netflix, the online DVD rental and movie streaming company is a favorite among converts to online entertainment. The Los Gatos, Calif.-based company offers unlimited movie streaming from its 12,000 title catalogue for just $9 a month.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), both of which operate successful online streaming services, are also already benefitting, as is software giant Microsoft Corp. (MSFT). In the past three months, owners of Microsoft Xbox 360 game consoles have bought packages that let them stream Netflix titles over their game machines and have watched 1.5 billion minutes of programming over that period.

Makers of hardware that connect Internet connections to television sets are also expected to see a booming business. While it doesn't disclose numbers, sales of Netflix's Roku device are thought to be soaring. Meanwhile, sales of Apple's Apple TV unit sales tripled in its last complete fiscal quarter.

Free video Web sites are also winners, though their payoff is muted because most rely on advertising revenues, which have fallen with the recession. Hulu is among the upstarts offering free, higher quality videos like NBC's "Office".

Meanwhile, Google Inc.'s (GOOG) YouTube, and Yahoo Inc.'s (YHOO) video Web site have seen increased use as well, according to a January report by comScore.

Optical discs use light to read and write data, and the color of the light is important. Older disc storage systems used red or infrared light, while the newer Blu-ray uses bluer light - hence the name. (Actually the name is a bit off, since the light is closer to violet.)

To understand why the switch from red to violet is a big deal, keep in mind that light can be thought of as having waves. Red light has a relatively long wavelength of around 700 nm (1 nm is a billionth of a meter) with violet light about half that wavelength.

Here comes another side-by-side comparison of Apple's iPhone 3G with RIM's BlackBerry Storm, which is considered as another iPhone Killer.

BlackBerry Storm is expected to be released some time in November exclusively by Verizon in the US and Vodafone in UK.

It's a little bit thicker (0.14inches more) and heavier (22g more) than iPhone 3G. And, surprisingly, BlackBerry Storm does not come with Wi-Fi support or they probably consider Verizon's 3G network is good enough.

BlackBerry Storm's screen is also a little bit smaller (3.2 inch) as compared to iPhone 3G (3.5 inch), however it sports a slightly higher resolution (460x360 pixels) than iPhone 3G (460x360 pixels).

Storm also allows you to sync iTunes music files via BlackBerry Media Sync and has its own media software to manage your music.

iPhone 3G is the best iPod Apple has ever created. The music and video playback experience is awesome. And, Apple continues to update features like Genius Playlist into iPhone makes iPhone's multimedia support nearly unbeatable. With its seamless integration with iTunes Store, you can download songs wirelessly or sync it between desktop using iTunes. iPhone 3G also supports a wide range of music formats but only plays Quick Time video.

Blu-ray Enthusiasts Alone Can't Save the Format

HDTV owners like Blu-ray best when it comes to putting something up on the big, expensive screen. That was the most notable message from a survey of HDTV owners released today by the Digital Entertainment Group.

Owners also think their hi-def sets are the bee's knees, and are willing to pay more for HD content, according to the numbers. But the main point was that Blu-ray will own the future, and the Los Angeles press conference today amounted to a cheering session for the format. The same association recently launched a $25 million promotional campaign for Blu-ray, in the face of growing reports from analysts that the format risks becoming a mere niche player.

Today's report pooh-poohed the many converters to Blu-ray. It seemed particularly dismissive of what I think is the biggest threat, the new Internet delivery services that compete with the hi-def disks. Two thirds of Blu-ray owners who are familiar with downloading or streaming still prefer the HD disks, according to the group. HDTV owners in general, even if they don't own Blu-ray, agree at almost a 10-to-1 margin.

Defenders, meanwhile, also say that at $200, Blu-ray players are cheaper than DVD players were at this point in their adoption. And disk sales are ahead of where DVD was at this point.
I see nothing in any of the numbers to suggest Blu-ray has momentum. The adoption rates, and the survey as well, still represent early adopters. Hungry to fill their HD screens, enthusiasts are willing to spend money for the best. And there is no denying that Blu-ray offers the best in video and audio for HDTVs.

The question here, and not asked by the survey, is what it will take to get others to buy them. Is the step up to Blu-ray worth the steep premium that's asked today?

The entertainment group took comfort that a vast majority of respondents simply like having a physical disk, and cited that as a reason to buy Blu-ray. That only reinforces in my mind that we're talking about a minority made up of enthusiasts.

I own few DVDs, which is the same for most of my friends. I suspect it's a small portion of home viewers who amass a library of movies, though one studio executive noted they account for much of any format's sales. "We will see those heavy buyers stay in the physical world for a long, long time to come," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

But owning disks will have less appeal this time around. Many people bought DVDs to be able to watch a good movie whenever they wanted. It was a crude and expensive form of video on demand. Now we can get good-quality, on-demand viewing across cable and the Internet.
Even among movie renters, DVD had clear advantages that Blu-ray doesn't. DVD was not only better quality than VHS, but offered new features and was vastly more convenient. Blu-ray offers better quality and has new features that DVDs don't, but is no more convenient. And DVD didn't face the challenge from digital delivery. "When you add in the growth of digital delivery, which is really getting pretty exciting right now, we anticipate that the industry is going to return to healthy growth by the end of next year."

To survive, Blu-ray needs to grab market share while it can. The great unknown, and not asked in the group's survey, is what it will take to get Blu-ray to mass-market adoption.
I don't think $200 players will do it. I don't think $150 players will do it. They need to be under $100, and soon or the format flounders. Greedy electronics makers and merchants risk stifling the format at a time when it can't afford to stall.

Netflix HD Streaming Previewed in New Xbox Experience

Sweet! It looks like HD video content is very much going to be a reality from Netflix; and the Xbox 360 is going to be the first to bring it to users. According to Engadget, who’ve just published a hands-on impression article on the New Xbox Experience (NXE), state that the “quality was stunning.” Darren Murph at Engadget followed up on this new feature and discovered that HD Netflix Streaming is currently in a “soft launch” with about 300 titles available for viewing. Interestingly, neither Netflix’s Watch Instantly for PC, Netflix Playber by Roku, LG BD300 or Samsung P2500/P2550 Blu-ray players will be able to access or play any of the new HD content — at least for now.

UPDATE 1: It appears that “full” Netflix HD video will only be playable on HDCP compliant HDMI / DVI TVs & computer monitors, according to Format War Central and Gizmodo. Component connections also seem to work, but some belive that it may become limited to 480p resolution. Engadget currently has a post up claiming that 1080i via Component is working just fine with Netflix HD.

UPDATE 2: Gizmodo is reporting that the Neflix Player by Roku will begin supporting Netflix HD Streaming in December 2008.

How iTunes could become the ultimate DVD ripper--and why Apple won't let it

The first smattering of user reactions to RealNetworks' RealDVD software--which allows users to legally rip DVD movies to their PC hard drives--is less than enthusiastic, to say the least. The most telling comment: "Lack of mobile device support is the killer for me." Indeed, Real's product lets you move ripped movies between a total of five licensed PCs, but that assumes they're on a USB hard drive or some sort of flash media--thus far, there's no provision for network streaming, and no support for transferring the movies to portable devices."

Of course, when people say "portable media players," it's pretty much a synonym for "iPod." And while we could imagine Real eventually cutting deals to have devices that are compatible with its proprietary RealDVD format, it's a safe bet that Apple won't be among the partners. But the whole existence of RealDVD raises another question: if Real can release software that makes it quick, easy, and legal for users to rip DVDs to PC hard drive, why can't Apple?

Real's software is built on the legal precedent set by Kaleidescape's 2007 victory over the DVD Copy Control Association. Provided that you are backing up DVDs that you own, doing so for your own personal use, and keeping the copy-protection intact, Real's betting that it, too, can keep the lawyers at bay. Assuming the company is correct, though, that would seem to open the floodgates for other companies to release kosher DVD rippers.

Apple's iTunes already lets you rip audio CDs --indeed, the original iTunes tagline was "Rip, Mix, Burn." One would think adding DVD ripping to iTunes' bag of tricks wouldn't be that big of a challenge. Yes, like Real's solution, an Apple-ripped DVD would have to be locked into a proprietary, DRM-encoded iTunes-only format. But for most people, that'll be a feature, not a bug. You'd pop the disc into your PC, and iTunes would ask how you'd want it ripped: optimized for Apple TV streaming or optimized for iPod/iPhone (i.e. larger, high-res files or smaller downscaled ones). Once it was in iTunes, the files could be transferred within the entire Applesphere of products: the PC desktop (Windows and Mac iTunes libraries), the living room (Apple TV), and the portable realm (iPod and iPhone).

Now, the more digital-savvy among you are already saying, "I can do all of this already." Indeed, there are plenty of freeware/shareware programs that can rip your DVDs into an iTunes-optimized format, at the resolution of your choosing, where you can then do whatever you'd like with the file--including watch it on your PC, stream it to an Apple TV, or transfer it to an iPod or iPhone. But that's still a two-step process (at mininum) that requires a modicum of techie skills to get up and running. By contrast, building the process into iTunes would make it all but a one-click operation.

Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, I think you better keep those underground freeware rippers installed--I don't think we'll be seeing this feature added to iTunes anytime soon, for two reasons. First, it's unclear if Real's legal gambit will pay off.

After all, precedents were made to be overturned, and even if their position isn't legally tenable, deep-pocketed movie studios could try to tie down Real in expensive litigation--enough to make other companies shy away from releasing similar DVD ripping software.

Secondly--and arguably more importantly--it's not really in Apple's financial interest to add DVD ripping to iTunes. The company wants to expand, not shrink, the demand for its online iTunes Store: Apple makes nothing if you rip a DVD, but it (and its studio partners) split anywhere from $3 to $15 per flick, depending if you rent or buy. The company isn't likely to kill off that revenue stream anytime soon.

I'd love to be wrong on this one. It'd be great if one of the big announcements at Tuesday's Apple event was the addition of DVD ripping to iTunes. But I think this one is going to remain strictly on the "in an ideal world" wish list.

09.17.2008 — The average U.S. consumer spends $8 out of every $10 of their movie budget on buying or renting DVDs, according to a study by the NPD Group.

Part two: Free remove iTunes DRM music on Mac
However, in order to remove DRM protection, you will need iMovie - iMovie is a separate application, the current iteration of iMovie released with the iLife '08 software bundle is iMovie 1. You can download iMovie at Apple - http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovie714.html. Once downloaded and installed, start iMovie and 'Create a New Project' titled 'DRM-free', then save the project to your Desktop.

2.In the iMovie window, select the 'Media' tab located between 'Themes' and 'Editing'. You will notice that the top right portion of the interface now offers a media browser. Select the 'Audio' tab and locate the playlist which contains purchased music, or search by artist / title.
Select the DRM-laden song and drag the file from the media browser into the iMovie timeline where it says 'Drag audio here to build your project.'

3.In order to export the song, iMovie requires that a visual image be associated with the audio track. Simply drag a blank image (or any other image as you like) to the track above the previously imported audio file.
Once iMovie has processed the image, select the 'Share…' sub menu item from found inside 'Share' in iMovie's menu bar.

Right click on the song you are going to make into a ringer and select “Get Info.”
Go to the options tab and go down to the “Start Time” and “Stop Time” check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to start/stop. The ringer has to be 30 seconds or less. Click OK when you’re done.

Right click on your newly “clipped” song and select “Convert Selection to AAC.” The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times determined (If your menu item does not read “Convert Selection to AAC” and reads “Convert Slection to MP3″ (or some other format) please go to iTunes Preferences Advanced Importing and change the “Import Using” drop down menu to “AAC Encoder”).

After the song is done encoding navigate to your iTunes Music folder, locate your song, and drag it to your desktop. After the song is on your desktop go back to iTunes and delete the clipped version from you iTunes library (It won’t delete it from your desktop, it will only remove it from iTunes).

Go back the song on your desktop and right click on your song and chose “Get info.” Go to the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r (or you can just change the extension right from your desktop)

After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add it to your iTunes library under the ringtones section. Sync your phone with iTunes and you’re done!
